How to Hang, Mount and Power a Neon Sign
Installing an LED neon sign is straightforward and rarely needs a professional. This guide covers the common options.
1. Choose your mounting style
- Hanging chains: the sign hangs slightly away from the wall, casting a soft halo behind it. Good for windows and ceilings.
- Standoff mounts: the sign sits flush and floats a short distance from the wall for a clean, modern look.
- Freestanding: a base or stand lets you place a sign on a shelf, counter or floor.
2. Mark and drill
Hold the sign or template against the wall, mark the fixing points with a level and drill. Use wall plugs suited to your wall type: plasterboard, brick or concrete each need different fixings.
3. Plan the cable
Keep the power adapter close to an outlet and consider how the cable will run. Cable clips or a channel can hide it neatly. Do not cover the adapter or the transformer.
4. Power and dimming
LED neon plugs into a low-voltage adapter. If you ordered a dimmer or remote, position it where it is easy to reach. Turn the sign on and check every line lights evenly before you fix the final position.
Outdoor installations
For outdoor signs, use the waterproof-rated adapter and keep connections off the ground and sheltered. If in doubt, ask an electrician to make the final connection.
